Athens 2004 Olympic games was a reason for most hotel owners to renovate their properties. Some of them made very good renovations some others only facede lifts.
The majority of the hotels are close to the metro except those located by the coastal areas like Alimos, Voula, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, Lagonissi, Anavyssos.In Athens you can choose from 5* hotels to hostels.

A good choise is to search for a 3* or 4* hotel around the areas of Acropolis(Hotel Herodion, Hotel Philippos, Hotel Hera, Hotel Parthenon,Hotel Ava), Plaka(Hotel Plaka, Hotel Hermes, Hotel Electra Palace)or Syntagma(Hotel Amalia, Hotel Electra, Hotel Achileas, Hotel Athens Cypria,Hotel Athos).A typical double room with breakfast in these areas if you book through a Travel agency will cost around 100€ for a 3* hotel and around 130€ for a 4*.
If you wish to spent less money you should look for an hotel around the areas of Omonia, (Hotel Golden City, Hotel Delphi Art, Hotel Marina,Hotel Art.) Metaxourgio (Hotel Stanley, Hotel Cosmos, Hotel Minoa) Larissis train station (Hotel Oscar, Hotel Candia, Hotel Nana.).
Reservations are recommended, especially in the summer months.
